Classical Composers
I'll mostly speak of two composers, since I only own CDs from two composers.
The first is Mozart.
Mozart's mastery of composition is where his charm lies. The way he crafts works of immense complexity with ease is astounding. Mozart was known to write works within minutes, thinking them all up in his head before hand, almost as though composition was second nature to him, he did write his first work at the age of 5 and first Symphonie at 12. Famous composer Joseph Haydn said of Mozart "the greatest composer known to me in person or by name; he has taste and, what is more, the greatest knowledge of composition" If you listen to Mozart's music attentively, you can really pick out all the little subtleties in his music, which float from instrument to instrument, section to section.
While things like this may only be noticeable to a musician's ears, the thing which I notice in his music is a clean sound, all the parts work with eachother, one part compliments the other, or contrasts it, throughout all of this though a harmony exists. It's refresing, and when I listen to Mozart it really clears up my mind. I think maybe it's the liveliness in his music that I enjoy, a big contrast to other things I listen to.
Recommended works from the CD I got:
Sting Quintet in D, Larghetto-Allegro
Piano Concerto No.19, Allegro
Ave Vernum Corpus, Andante
Next Composer is quite a contrast.
Erik Satie was a French composer, who composed in the late 19th century into the 20th. He was part of the impressionist movement, and was known to be friends with Pablo Picasso, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and others.
He wasn't the most skilled musician, he failed music school initially. This might be the key to the charm of his music however. His songs are simple, and short. Simple chord progressions, and simple melodies, is it with these however that Satie creates extremely impactful music. His music is both emotionally expressive and eccentric. Going from beautiful works, to comical caberet songs with loud banging that offsets upbeat playful melodies.
It is his more expressive works which I really like. They create an atmosphere of emotion while remaining uncertain enough as to make his music seem applicable to anyone. It's very immersive to me, it sounds like a trip to the countryside. That's simply my view, I think people could imagine their own scenarios for his music.
My recommend works are:
Gymnopedies 1-3, 1 and 3 are my favorites though.
Gnossienness no.5, Modere, perhaps my favorite work of his.
All of Nocturnes, the melody almost stumbles, but remains steady enough to be interesting.
