Maybe We Should Trade Records
Shugo Tokumaru did a cover of "Young Folks" by Peter Bjorn and John and a cover, of the cover by M. Ward, of the Daniel Johnston song "To Go Home". First, Shugo Tokumaru has be one of my favorite musicians and now he's doing covers of songs by other musicians I'm crazy about. Maybe we should trade records, if I happen to be in Tokyo and somehow meet Shugo anyone time soon, you know.
As far the actual covers go. The "Young Folks" cover is great instrumentally and Shugo does pretty well with the male vocal part, but whoever he got to sing the Victoria Bergsman part is not so great. She sounds drunk, or like she just finished intense dental surgery and her mouth is all numb. Ruins some of the cuteness from the original, especially the vocal harmony in the chorus.
The cover of a cover, well it's just delicious. The lyrics are all in Japanese, but the syllable count is the same. Lots of the driving sound of the M.Ward cover is gone, and the song takes on that quirky bedroom folk feel that's typical Shugo fare. Fortunately the Japanese girl that sings Neko Case's background vocals does a good job here.
Coke Machine Glow commissioned a bunch of their favorite artists to do covers, and both of these covers, and tons more can be found here. The 15 covers they got are split into 2 podcasts, so you won't be able to pick out single tracks. I might make mp3s of both of these Shugo covers and maybe even post them.

Wait, Krsna, you like Daniel Johnston? I would NEVER have guessed that. Ever.
No, I don't. I like a cover that M.Ward did of a Daniel Johnston song. I haven't liked any songs from Daniel Johnston that he recorded himself.
I've never even heard the original song, and I am listening to it right now. The M. Ward version is much better. The composition is better, and that voice...how about it.
Haha okay yeah. I'm not a Daniel Johnston fan either. But I loved The Devil and Daniel Johnston (the movie). I really loved it.
